I'm always curious what people have to say when they're asked, what is the perfect film?
Is there a perfect film?
What would be the closest film to perfection?
What qualifications would comprise the perfect film?
I could go on forever talking about this, but the bottom line is, I don't believe the perfect film has ever been made.
Based on ticket sales and gross revenue, you could say Star Wars (1977), Titanic, or the Phantom Menace may be the closest to perfection. That would make George Lucas a total pioneer, which he is.
Jurassic Park sold a hoard as well.
I have 4 criteria which I think have to comprise the perfect film...
1)it has to appeal to a large WORLDWIDE audience, especially the largest group of movie-goers, which is around 17-24 year olds.
2)there has to be the *kid factor*. Meaning, it either has to appeal to kids or have kids in it. Example Star Wars, ET, even animation like Toy Story, Monsters Inc, etc.
2)it has to be tasteful. Too much cussing, too many explosions, and people dying won't qualify.
3)It has to have some humor.
4)It must leave a lasting impression. Meaning, people will talk about it after leaving the theater and maybe even opt to go back to see it multiple times.
Notice I don't mention romance as a necessity. I do believe there's a lot of films these days that have unnecessary romance, like Pearl Harbor.
So in closing, I'm curious what you think. Is there a perfect film or what's the closest to perfection out there? What are the qualifications? can you expand or rewrite my criteria? Do you have some ideas other than what I've mentioned?
Lastly, if you set out to write the perfect film, what would be the foundation, what would you have to have in the film and what would you most definitely avoid?
If you check the links (some I'm still building up), you'll see some films and actors I like .... and some I dislike.
